Fight for NK
Stop the sewage sludge plant
Plant Proposal
The Sludge Plant is NOT DEAD!

-
We recently learned that the Quonset Development Corporation had signed a "non-binding letter of intent" to a private company to construct a prospective, large-scale sewage sludge processing plant in North Kingstown at West Davisville near the East Greenwich town line. *
-
We believe that the plant could handle an estimated 58,000 thousands tons of sewage sludge each year +. The plant will use a process called pyrolysis which is the thermal decomposition of organic material at high temperatures in the absence (or near absence) of oxygen, producing gases, liquids, and solid residues.

-
The Woonsocket sewage sludge incinerator is anticipated to permanently close sometime over the next several years.
-
Given there is no sewage sludge processing plant alternative in-state that could handle the annual tonnage of sludge with Woonsocket's facility offline, the North Kingstown plant could possibly become the new sewage sludge hub for Rhode Island.

+ Correction: this is the estimated annual amount of sludge processed, NOT the daily amount of sludge.
